Beamer

Two lovers on the run from fantasy to reality.

“You can never marry our daughter! We went through hell raising Suzan,” Chacha exclaimed.

“You see, unlike your thugged-out family, my family is adorned with morals. We’re just not a match,” he continued.

“Let’s face it, you will probably die in a shootout like your father or end up in jail like your mother. Snakes don’t give birth to rabbits!” Chacha taunted Kai.

“So, please, do my Suzan a favour by staying away and letting her find a good man,” Chacha criticized Kai.

“Suzan, don’t ever bring this thug into my house again. Coming here dressed in white like you’re clean and all that, you’re nothing but a dirty ghetto scum,” Chacha stood up and left the room.

Suzy held her tongue.

“I think you should go now,” Suzy’s mother kindly told Kai.

On his way out, Kai glanced at the BMW E46 parked under the shade and couldn’t help but take a liking to the German masterpiece.

Kai arrived home and called Frank, his friend who deals with cars.

“Man, Chacha turned down serious buyers who wanted to pay ten million cash for that car. He loves that car more than he loves his own family,” Frank informed Kai.

“But I believe he can accept 12 million,” Frank expressed his hope.

“Okay, let’s try him,” Kai said optimistically. Frank called Chacha.

“Chacha said no! He said maybe he can consider 15 million,” Frank delivered the response.

Kai contemplated his next move. “Bro, let’s meet at the shop in 30,” Kai told Frank.

Frank arrived at the Kai’s shop and collected the money in the black leather bag and received instructions on how to purchase the vehicle.

“Are you sure about this, bro?” Frank asked.

“1000%, bro,” Kai assured him.

Three hours later, as the sun was setting, Kai received a call.

“It’s a done deal, bro. Are you still at the shop?” Frank asked.

Kai was at the shop, scheming and patiently waiting to hear from Frank.

“Chacha is a very difficult man. He got suspicious at a certain point and almost told me to leave,” Frank expressed his fatigue.

Frank received his commission, and Kai took the car for a wash that same evening.

Not a single soul believed their eyes when they saw Chacha’s BMW at the city’s most notorious car wash.

After keeping people in suspense, Kai finally hopped out of the car, and all hell broke loose at the revelation as the carwash staff surrounded the car in disbelief. It was quite a sight to see.

Kai and Suzy had planned a road trip to Tanga the next morning. Suzy arrived at Kai’s place wearing black tight jeans, a black cleavage-peeping top with a cream coat with black spots.

Just like the guys at the car wash, she was shocked to find her dad’s car in Kai’s front yard. She took a step back and called Kai, “Babe, why is my dad’s car here?”

“Well, your old man and I are chilling in the living room, come join us,” he teased her.

“Is this some kind of sick joke?” She wasn’t amused.

Kai opened the front door with car keys in his hand and told her, “Guess who’s driving today!”

“What am I not getting here?” She wondered.

“See, your dad does mind me having you, but he doesn’t mind me having his favourite car,” Kai boasted.

“Gosh, this thing men have with cars! You almost gave me a heart attack,” Suzy eased up and giggled as they kissed and hugged.

“I know Papa has been mean, but today the world is yours!” Suzy was excited.

They went inside for breakfast, Suzy loved the brown bread, spicy vegetable omelette with camel milk.

Afro music blasted from the newly-installed sound system as they drove on Bagamoyo Road.

“Dad never wanted anyone to drive this car. Damn, picture me rolling today!” Suzy felt great speeding over 100 km/h.

“Babe, can you slow down a bit? Traffic police have been hungry as a motherfucker these days,” Kai expressed concern.

“Come on, it’s too early. It’s only 7 AM,” she softly ignored and kept on disregarding the speed limit road signs.

They reached Zinga, a small town twenty kilometres outside Bagamoyo, and from a distance, they saw a black tricycle motor waiting to enter the main road. Suddenly, a traffic police officer hopped out of the tricycle and pulled them over.

Suzy slowed down and stopped about a hundred meters past the police.

As the traffic police officer was approaching the vehicle, Suzy realized she did not carry her driver’s license.

When the officer reached the driver’s window, he found Kai in the driver’s seat.

“You must be in a big hurry, huh?” “Driver’s license, please?” The officer requested. Kai handed over his license and was fined for speeding.

“Are you the owner of this car?” the officer asked Kai as he returned the license.

“Yes, sir,” Kai confidently responded.

The officer walked to the front of the car and made a phone call.

“Good morning, Commander Chacha. Sorry to call this early, but I wanted to ask if you sold that BMW of yours because there is a man out here driving it like a getaway car,” the officer reported.

“There’s a woman in the car too, I think she could be your daughter. Do you know anything about this?” the officer snitched.

“What’s the driver’s name?” Chacha asked.

“His name is Kai Dalasini,” the officer replied.

Suzy’s phone rang, louder than usual. Her dad was calling, and she answered. “Suzan, where are you?” Daddy asked.

“I’m somewhere near Bagamoyo, heading to Tanga, Dad,” Suzy honestly replied.

“I see you’ve decided to become part of my shame, but you’re supposed to be on my side, my child,” Chacha expressed disappointment.

“I’m on your side, Dad,” Suzy politely replied.

“If you’re really on my side, please get off that car and stop rolling with that thug,” Chacha gave Suzy an ultimatum.

“Open the trunk,” the police ordered.

“Is there a problem, sir?” Kai asked.

“Open the trunk. I want to search the car,” the police ordered Kai again.

Kai reached into his pocket, pulled out about a hundred thousand from his black jeans, and handed it to the policeman.

“Keep your money and open the goddamn trunk,” the policeman got aggressive.

Kai drove away like a drag racer.

“What are you doing? Can you please stop? Why are you doing this? We’re going to get in big trouble for this,” Suzy was all over the place, but Kai remained unfazed.

“I’m going to open the door and jump out of this madness,” Suzy threatened.

“No, no, no, babe, don’t do that. I will tell you what’s on going but you have to calm down,” Kai pleaded.

Suzy took a deep breath.

“Okay, I’m calm now. Tell me,” Suzy listened.

“Suzy, I have guns and stacks of money in the trunk. I just can’t afford to get caught,” Kai confessed.

Suzy stared at Kai hoping it was just a bad dream.

“So, are they your guns or someone else’s?” she asked curiously.

“No, they’re not my guns, babe, I’m supposed to drop them off once we get to Tanga,” Kai replied.

“Gosh! But why would you?” Suzy was exasperated.

“I know you deal with cars, and you occasionally have some bad deals, but not guns. This is just really bad!” Suzy complained.

“And I thought we were going to have fun, but you decided to sneak in your dealings,” Suzy was heartbroken.

“Ok. Do you know how those guns are going to be used?” Suzy questioned.

“Honestly, I have no idea,” Kai replied.

Silence fell between them.

“It bothers me that you’re giving such simple answers!” Suzy was angry. Kai simply said, “Okay.”

“You don’t strike me as a criminal, babe,” Suzy told Kai. He responded with a monotonous ‘Okay.’

“I’m pregnant,” Suzy broke the news, and Kai’s stunned response was, “Wait, what?”

“Baby, are you serious?” Kai struggled to react.

“I’m pregnant! And this? This can’t be our life,” Suzy burst into tears.

“I don’t want to have to lie to our kid that Mom and Dad are studying abroad. They’ll eventually grow up and find out the truth someday.”

“You’re about to become a father; you have to think about the consequences of your actions!” Suzy broke down as she pulled tissues from her bag.

Suzy’s dad called again, and she answered in a low tone, “Hello.”

“Suzan, my child, have you been crying? What has that pirate done to you?” Chacha bitterly asked.

“I’m so sorry, and I’m so scared Dad,” Suzy apologized.

“Tell that bastard I will destroy him if he ever-!” Kai took Suzy’s phone and hung up, leaving Chacha hanging on the line.

Chacha called Suzy again, but Kai didn’t answer.

Chacha then started calling Kai, but he didn’t answer.

A police pickup truck began tailing them, and that’s when Kai and Suzy knew it was them against the world.

“We can’t go to jail!” Suzy was in denial.

“Of course, we won’t,” Kai replied confidently.

“You think this is a clean police pursuit? Think! Why aren’t they using the siren?” Kai compelled Suzy.

“If they catch us, you’re going home, and they will definitely whack me,” Kai pointed out.

Silence fell again between them.

“I’m sorry I got you into this mess. I’ll get us out,” Kai promised Suzy.

“I just feel like I don’t know you anymore or that I never knew you at all,” Suzy thought aloud.

“I thought you were different from the rest of your family. I was wrong,” Suzy regretted.

“With all due respect, I think it’s your dad that you should worry about. He’s the devil,” Kai told Suzy.

“My dad is a good man. He keeps people safe,” Suzy defended her father.

“Wait till you see his true colours,” Kai told Suzy.

“If you want to say anything about my father just say it, I am in no mood of playing hide and seek with two grown men,” Suzy challenged Kai.

“Look, you’ll find out about your father, just not from me, and especially not this time, okay?” Kai resisted.

“Well, I think this is a perfect time, and you are the perfect person since we are both running away from the same man. We might as well spice it up,” Suzy insisted.

“I have a lot to worry about right now, Suzy. Can we postpone the drama?” Kai suggested.

“No, I want you to tell me or else I will open the door and jump out,” Suzy was adamant, Kai stopped her.

They took a left turn and drove on Msata Road, with the police truck tailing them.

They got pulled over by every traffic police on the road, but they never gave in.

“Tell me what you know,” Suzy demanded.

“Oh yeah?” Kai questioned.

“You sure you’ve got the guts for it?” Kai tested her.

“Just tell me already, alright?” Suzy demanded.

“Okay, alright,” Kai began. “Our families have a long, twisted history.” Suzy listened intently.

“Our parents cross-dated,” Kai started.

“My mother and your father were lovers when my father was in a relationship with your mother,” Kai took Suzy on a trip down memory lane.

“It was clearly a mismatch. Your father was a young police officer, and my mother had a thing for danger, so she always found herself in bad situations. But your father always rescued her,” Kai continued. “My father was a small-time criminal, and your mother was a church girl.”

“My mother started seeing my father as more of her type, so they started dating. Then your father ended up with your mother to settle the score, and they were all fine with it,” Kai told Suzy, who had been listening carefully.

Kai drove the BMW like a race car and skilfully drifted into Saadani’s off-road track, leaving the bystanders in a frenzy.

Kai kicked up the dirt road, creating a cloud of dust, while the police truck aggressively pursued them.

“My parents built an empire with the help of your father, Suzy. They had him in their pockets for a long time, and your father got rich from my family’s dirty money,” Kai revealed.

“Later, your father faced pressure from his boss to take down my parents’ organization. He kept demanding more money while our shipments were being massively busted by the patrol police,” Kai informed Suzy.

“Someone in the department had figured out that your father was dirty, and when push came to shove, he saw my family as a ticket to his promotion. His men shot my father, and later on, he led the revenue authority to go after my mother for tax evasion,” Kai knew too much.

“And how did you come to know all of this?” Suzy asked.

“Mama told me everything. I’ve seen the wedding photo album with pictures of your parents at my parents’ wedding, I took some pics on my phone… here, have a look,” Kai gave Suzy his phone to swipe through.

The police truck only grew closer and more aggressive.

They approached Bagamoyo Sugar estate, Kai drifted and took a sharp right turn.

The police took the bait! Their truck drifted, lost balance, flipped multiple times, and landed on its back.

Kai and Suzy heard the crash and immediately stopped the car.

Kai got out of the car, contemplating what to do next, knowing he had broken almost every road traffic law at that point.

“You’re still here? Are you waiting for Suzy? Let me call her,” Suzy’s mom told Kai, who was still recovering from the dreadful daydream.

“Y-yes, ma’am,” Kai murmured, and Suzy’s mom went inside.

When Suzy came out through the front door, Kai turned around and asked her, “Are you pregnant?”

Suzy nodded her head affirmatively.
